#014. Urban Village, Free diving, Face Blindness
Catching up on my thoughts with some shorter musings this week. I might keep this format if it means I can spend more time writing longer pieces. Enjoy!
Urban Village and Babies
With two of my friends having just had a baby together and three more friend couples with buns in the oven, I've been rethinking what it means to be nurturer in the context of community. It used to be dishing out multivitamins at the after party, but after they've traded the tequila bottle for the baby bottle, what's next for me now? And what would it look like for an urban village to help raise a baby? I'm not sure yet, but it's compelling me to learn more about the fourth trimester and brew stinky post-partum herbal tonics.
The Ocean is My Friend
Two weeks ago I got my free diving certification. Thanks to my amazing instructor, the scariest part was psyching myself on the 2 hour drive all the way down to Monterey. I got a glimpse of the tranquility that exists thirty feet below the rolling waves. It's the start to cultivating a relationship with the ocean. Anyone else inspired to free dive from reading Breath or watching My Octopus Teacher?
"Don't Change Your Hair"
Every time I get a haircut, my partner flips out. Consequently, I get angry because #mybodymychoice, but turns out the poor guy has face blindness. His distress comes from literally being unable to recognize who I am with different hair because his brain does not link who I am with my face alone. Like others with face blindness, he's developed coping mechanisms to identify people, like voice, gait, and in his case, hair.
Yet another example of the neurodiversity that exists within the human gene pool.
